GEO guide

Generative engine optimization: a durable framework

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a business’s information easier to find, verify, and accurately represent in AI-generated answers. It extends established technical SEO and content practices; it is not a shortcut for forcing an assistant to recommend a brand.

What GEO is—and is not

GEO focuses on source quality, useful content, clear entities, and measurable customer questions. It helps a system understand what you offer, who it is for, and what evidence supports your claims. It does not guarantee a particular answer, replace search engine optimization, or justify publishing low-value pages at scale.

The four foundations

1. Factual clarity

Make core facts unambiguous. Your site should clearly state the product or service, intended customers, geography when relevant, pricing or pricing model, key capabilities, and limitations. Keep these details consistent across the pages where a visitor would expect to find them.

2. Useful answer-first content

Create pages around real decisions: use cases, comparisons, implementation questions, alternatives, integrations, and troubleshooting. Lead with a direct answer, then provide the detail needed to validate it. Original expertise and concrete examples are more useful than generic definitions.

3. Technical accessibility

Use stable URLs, meaningful page titles, descriptive headings, canonical URLs, a complete sitemap, and crawlable internal links. Ensure important public information does not depend solely on a browser interaction. Structured data can clarify meaning, but it must match visible content and does not create eligibility by itself.

4. Verifiable authority

Support claims with documentation, customer evidence, methodology, author expertise, and reputable third-party coverage where appropriate. Correct stale facts on your site and in the profiles or directories your audience relies on. Credibility is built by accuracy, not by markup alone.

A prioritized GEO checklist

  1. List the questions customers ask before choosing a provider.
  2. Audit the pages and sources that answer each question today.
  3. Fix factual gaps and inconsistent descriptions first.
  4. Create or improve the highest-intent content missing from the journey.
  5. Strengthen internal links between related product, proof, and guide pages.
  6. Add accurate organization, product, article, or FAQ structured data where it genuinely applies.
  7. Measure brand inclusion, positioning, competitor mentions, and cited sources over time.

Measure results responsibly

Use a fixed question set across relevant AI engines, keep examples with every score, and look for persistent patterns rather than reacting to one response. Pair AI visibility trends with traditional signals such as qualified traffic, conversions, brand search demand, and referral quality.

Mentioned helps teams monitor these questions and prioritize the next investigative step. For the measurement workflow, see our AI visibility monitoring guide.
